The Omega Dubai Desert Classic was born in 1989 when the European Tour visited Asia for the first time. It was the 38th event on the European Tour. The roll of honour includes six different Major Champions: Seve Ballesteros (1992), Ernie Els (1994, 02, 05), Fred Couples (1995), José Maria Olazábal (1998), Mark O’Meara (2004) and Tiger Woods (2006, 08).

Promoted and Organised by ‘golf in DUBAi’, the Omega Dubai Desert Classic offers the absolute best experience for spectators, sponsors and out-of-town guests wanting to see the best players in the world up close and personal. The event has held a high-profile sponsorship line up, including Omega as the title sponsor and Dubal (Dubai Aluminium) as the sponsor while BMW, CNN, Emirates Airline, Emirates NBD, Gulf News, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Jumeirah Hotels, MasterCard and wasl are co-sponsors.

The event is now played on the Majlis Golf Course at the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai, it has previously been played at the other DG Golf Course the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club in the beginning.

To highlight the 20th anniversary of the tournament in 2009, the field contained 11 of the 16 past winners. In total there were four former Major Champions and no fewer than 91 winners of European Tour events competed in the tournament, promoted and organized by ‘golf in DUBAi
